Question 3- What have you learned from your audience feedback?

What have you learned from your audience feedback?

Qualitative Feedback

Much of the feedback I received was quantitative data and although this proved useful, I wanted to get some deeper thoughts on my three texts. I asked 3 people some questions on each of my texts.

What I learnt

From this feedback I found that all of my texts were effective and linked together well. I also found that the designs of the digipak and music video were appealing to the audience because the images were eye-catching and the text was clear to read. My sample audience also really liked how the black and white and colour elements of the digipak matched the black and white and colour elements of the music video. This extra qualitative research backs up my quantitative research, adding validity to both.

Final Magazine Advert

Final Magazine Advert

This is my final magazine advert. I have made slight changes to this after my previous draft. I have made slight changes to the colouring of Nathan's face. I did this using the 'blur' tool, by selecting the lightest part of Nathan's face. I then used this colour to smooth out any imperfections. I also used the pen tool to add black and white to areas of his face to add a contoured effect. This is because pop stars on magazine posters always look very perfect and so this is the finish I wanted. Overall, I am very pleased with my magazine advert.

Final Digipak Plan

This is my final Digipak plan. As with the magazine advert, I contoured and smoothed out any imperfections on Nathan's face to made him look like more like a popstar. I also altered the brightness on the top right as the front image of Nathan was slightly too dark. Overall I am very happy with the overall finish of my digipak.

Audience Feedback: Third Digipak plan

Audience feedback- Fifth Magazine Advert

Image result for audience feedbackSince the last magazine advert, I have worked on changing the colours significantly as I know this was the main element that was letting my product down. I therefore have created a much brighter and lighter magazine advert, which I think is much more eye catching which is better when trying to market an artist. I also added my own record labels to link to the digipak.

I asked my audience for some feedback and this is a summary of what I received:

  • The image isn't as pink so this is much more effective.
  • The image is much clearer.
  • The background looks much greener, vibrant and more inviting.
  • The logos and record labels in the bottom corner look professional.
  • The font looks much better and clearer, contrasting nicely against the performer.
  • His skin could be perfected for a much more professional finish.
For the final edit I am going to work on contouring his skin and perfecting it using tools on photoshop to make the poster really high quality.

Final Edit- Fall At Your Feet

Final Edit

Here is the final edit of our music video for the Saint Raymond track 'Fall At Your Feet'. for this final edit, Izzy and I took the advice from our final set of audience feedback by reviewing where the footage cut to the beat. We wanted this to be perfect, so that the beats were cutting exactly to the rhythm of the music. We also trimmed some of the footage if there were any bits of footage where there was a significant length of time before anything actually happened.

We now feel as though this is at a high enough standard to submit as our final draft edit.

Final bit of editing- 06/11/16

Final Day of Editing!

Today we did the final bits of editing to complete out music video. After completing audience feedback we found that the end of our music video should be much more abrupt and slick with the editing so that each shot cut directly to the beat towards the end of the song.

Here is the final bit of footage we edited at the end in order to make the video more sleek.

This was a minor change to make but we really wanted the music video to be something we could be really proud of. We now plan to gather audience feedback for the final evaluation stage to see what our target audiences think of our final product.

Seventh Draft Edit

Seventh Draft Edit

This is my seventh draft edit of the music video. I have made changes based on the previous audience feedback and plan to gather more audience feedback for the next draft edit.

Sixth Draft Edit

Sixth Draft Edit

This is my sixth draft edit of the music video. I have made changes based on the previous audience feedback and plan to gather more audience feedback for the next draft edit.

Editing- 04/11/16

Editing again...

After gaining audience feedback on the previous edit, we decided to make the changes based on our own judgement and also on the audience feedback too. We firstly decided to make sure that the performer appeared on the line 'stop stop go' and not half way through the lyric. This just works better on the eye for the audience and makes it look much more polished.
We also changed the editing so that it cut away from 'maybe' because again, the footage looks much better if full lines are presented to the audience. We also amended a jump cut at 2.03 as it didn't look right in context of the music video.

Finally, we edited at 3.37 to cut away before cutting back the performer. This was a jump cut and we should have avoided this in the first place but we are fixing it now to make the music video even better. This will make the video look much more like a music video.

Audience Feedback- Fifth Edit (Music Video)

Audience Feedback- Fifth Edit

Image result for audience feedbackAgain, as with all the previous edits, we carried out audience feedback to see how we could still improve. Here is a summary of what we found and we have taken this on board. Will make these amendments on the following edit. We didn't make some of the improvements mentioned last time as we thought that we knew better (obviously not) so now we plan to change these too.
  • Still should cut to the performer on 'Stop stop go' for the first words.
  • 1.26-31 this should cut away from 'maybe'.
  • At 2.03, there is a jump cut which doesn't look quite right in context of the music video.
  • 2.36 is out of synch.
  • 3.37 you should cut away before cutting back to Nathan. The jump cut here should be avoided when round and round starts again so it looks more like a music video.

Fifth Draft Edit

Fifth Draft Edit

Here is our fifth draft edit. Here, we tightened up on some of the editing as we were aware that some shots didn't cut exactly to the beat of the song. By doing this, it should be much better on the eye and look much more professional. The smaller elements still need editing but this video is still a working progress. We also added a ending which acted as more of a closure for the video, rather than it ending abruptly like it did before.

Editing- 03/11/16

Editing, editing and more editing!!

Today we decided to edit again to work towards another draft edit of our music video so that we can continue to improve further. Our audience feedback showed that we didn't need anymore filming but some of the editing needed tightening up on, for example cutting exactly to the beat of the song to make it look effective.

We also edited so that the performer should now appear at the start of every line and not half way through. We also changed the editing to become much faster on the 'round and round' lyrics so that the shots are much quicker and cut to each beat, making many of the shots shorter which should make the video much more entertaining for the audience.

Audience Feedback- Second draft digipak

Second Draft Digipak Edit

Image result for audience feedbackI have asked for further feedback for the second draft of the digipak. This way, I can make amendments based on audience research and my own judgement to improve the quality of my digipak. This is the first draft with the new model as previously I had used a female, but after receiving audience feedback I found that this didn't link to the music video or sell the artist appropriately.

Here is the feedback summarised:

  • The front is way too pink, Nathan doesn't look human.
  • The front cover is also too dull, it isn't eye catching.
  • They look a bit 'samey' perhaps you should cut out Nathan for some of the inside slides to add variety to the design.
  • It would look good if you cut out your performer onto a white background.
  • I really like how the front and back images are colour and the inside is black and white.
From this information I know that using black and white for the inside panels is effective whilst having coloured outer panels is also effective too. This is something I am not going to change. However, for the front image, I need to edit the colours again and alter the brightness and contrasts because I agree, it is definitely too pink and makes my performers skin look sightly odd. This is something I plan to change in the following edits.

Audience Feedback- Fourth Draft Magazine Advert

Audience Feedback- Fourth Draft Magazine Advert

Image result for audience feedbackAfter receiving audience feedback on my third draft edit of the magazine advert, I decided to act on the feedback to create the next draft. I decided to play with the manipulation of the image in order to create something that looked unique whilst maintaining the overall design of my magazine advert.

Here is a summary of the feedback I received:
  • The image is too pink, you can tell that it has been edited too much.
  • The subject is focused and the background is blurred which creates a nice effect.
  • The contrast of the white font on the purple/pink shirt looks good.
  • The image is a bit too dull.
  • The white writing at the top isn't clear against the background so this information could be missed.
  • More logos could be added to the bottom.
I am therefore going to make the image less pink so that the contrasts with the text work better, just to create a much more polished product.

Audience Feedback- Fourth Draft Edit (Music Video)

Audience Feedback- Fourth Draft Edit

After completing a fourth draft edit we feel as though our video is really coming on nicely. We know that there are weaker areas to our music video and plan to amend these, but again, we find that it is incredibly useful to gain audience feedback. This is a summary of what people have said for Izzy and I to improve our music video even further.

Image result for audience feedback
  • I don't think anymore filming is needed but the editing still needs tightening up, for example cutting EXACTLY to the beat of the song. This will look very effective.
  • In terms of editing, you should try to edit so that each time Nathan (the performer) appears, he appears at the start of each line of a lyric.
  • Nathan needs to appear on 'Stop stop go' because this is when the lyrics begin, so it would work better if he appears here.
  • 0.58 shouldn't be sped up.
  • The 'round and round' lyrics- the clips here should be shorter and much faster editing to go with the pace of the lyrics.
  • During 3.46-3.56 the shots are too long. They should be shorter for a sleeker effect.

Fourth Draft Edit (Music Video)

Fourth Draft Edit for Music Video

This is my Fourth Draft edit of the music video. I have made changes based on the previous audience feedback and plan to gather more audience feedback for the next draft edit.

Editing again- 01/11/16

Editing again...

Today we edited again. This time we added in the new performance element where the performer is much more animated an therefore more entertaining to watch.
This is part of the footage we added in.
As well as this, we needed to add titles to the beginning of the music video due to this element being a typical convention of music videos, as well as this element informing the audience of the title of the music video and the artist. We did this on Adobe Premiere Pro by selecting the 'titles' tool and then 'edit still frame' where we could then insert the titles. It was actually difficult to get the text central so I actually used a ruler and measured it on the screen. We opted for a white serif font as we thought this contrasted nicely against the background. We chose this from the drop down list, selecting 'felix'.

We also edited the end of the music video as in the previous edit we had left some of the performance element in colour, so we changed this to black and white. We also changed the end footage by selecting an actual order, as in the previous edit it was slightly disjointed. We also tightened up on some of the editing to try and get it to cut more to the beat, however this is something we plan to perfect more in the upcoming edits.

Audience Feedback- Third Draft Edit (Music Video)

Audience Feedback- Third Draft Edit (Music Video)

Image result for audience feedbackSince gathering audience feedback on my second draft edit, I have made ammendements in order to improve the music video further.

This is a summary of what I found:
  • The cinematic effects add something extra to the music video, which makes it fit even more into the indie genre.
  • The black cinematic bars are partiularly effective, again adding to the indie genre.
  • The editing needs tightening up on, it needs to cut to the beat.
  • The ending is a little disjointed, the clips need reordering.
  • Some of the clips at the end aren't in black and white.
I therefore plan to change these elements in the next draft edit to continue improving the product further.

Third Draft Edit (Music Video)

Third Draft Edit

Today, Izzy and I decided to make further advancements on our music video. We added a 'cinematic' effect by adding two black bars to the top and bottom of the video, as well as altering the colour to give a more professional feel to the video. Next week, we plan to add in the new footage of our performer and also re-film an ending for our music video.

Refilming- 27/10/16

Refilming

Today, Izzy and I also refilmed Nathan, our performer. We did this due to feedback from our previous edit. The feedback we recieved showed that we needed to refilm mainly the first verse, because Nathan didn't really express himself as we wanted. Futher on in the video when he became more confident infront of the camera, he began to use more facial and hand expressions which made the video more interesting. We were also missing some of the footage we needed for some of the verses and so we decided that it would be a good idea to re-film all of the verses incase we needed to change some of the footage. From the first shoot, we learnt that it was better to film each verse, stop, and then re-film because doing one take meant that some of the lyrics were not sang as we needed them. Overall, we are very happy with the performance element and we think it will work really well in our music video.
One of the clips of our performer singing.

Editing- 27/10/16

 Editing

After researching into the use of colour to make our music video more cinematic, Izzy and I decided to apply what we have learnt to our own music video. We played around with the colour to see what we thought looked the best. We oringally went for a more orange toned effect, but in places where we had filmed indoors, it made the footage look way to artifical and orange. After playing around with the colours some more, we decided on a very faint orange/brown tone. This took quite a long time to change because we had to alter each clip individually and couldn't change the colour by grouping all of the clips together and then altering the colour. Even though it did take quite a long time, it was worth it in the end. To do this, we went to effect controls, then fast colour corrector, and then edited the numbers below the colour wheel to get the particular colour we wanted on each of the clips.
We then added the black cinematic bars to the top and bottom of the music video. These are the pink parts underneath the video. We did this by adding two black screens and then shrunk each one from the top and then from the bottom, so that each video clip sits inbetween the two black bars. This means that next week, we need to move some of the clips up or down so that we don't chop off anyones heads or have important parts of the footage out of shot.

Researching cinematic effects

Researching cinematic effects for our music video

Today Izzy and I have decided that we want to focus on altering the colour on our music video. When conducting research before we started filming for our music video, we both noticed that the videos we thought were most effective and suited the 'indie' genre the best were the ones that had a cinematic effect on them. We didn't to alter the colours significantly, but we did want to add a subtle change in colour.

We decided to go on to YouTube to get some tips on the easiest and most effective way to add the two black bars to create a cinematic effect, as well as adding colour to our clips. The video below was very useful because we were able to follow it step by step to find how to edit each part on Adobe Premiere Pro.

Audience Feedback- Second Draft Edit (Music Video)

Audience Feedback- Second Draft Edit

Image result for questionAs with the first draft edit, we decided to conduct audience feedback. We will do this for each draft edit in order to improve our product even further. Since the first draft edit we completed, we made all of the improvements that our audience suggested. After all; they are the ones who will be consuming our product so their opinions are very valid. Here is a summary of audience feedback from our second draft edit, which we will alter for the next draft edit we produce.

It is important to note that we haven't decided how we are going to edit the ending, so after 3minutes 8 seconds, footage is placed in a random order which we plan to change in the next few weeks.

  • With the new improvements it looks much more like a music video, displaying more typical conventions of a music video.
  • More performance needed to make it appear more like a music video rather than a narrative.
  • The close up shots of the performer and the guitar are really successful, but the mid shots of the performer are less successful. He needs to be more animated by moving his hands more, with more facial expressions too.
  • The ending could be more romantic.
  • Some of the shots are slightly clunky, for example the shot of both actors pointing at the posters.
  • 3 minutes 29 seconds is out of focus.
  • The ducks are not effective, the gate has been used before and at the end, the performer isn't signing but this is because you haven't finished this element yet.
