Audience Feedback- Third Draft Edit (Music Video)

Audience Feedback- Third Draft Edit (Music Video)

Image result for audience feedbackSince gathering audience feedback on my second draft edit, I have made ammendements in order to improve the music video further.

This is a summary of what I found:
  • The cinematic effects add something extra to the music video, which makes it fit even more into the indie genre.
  • The black cinematic bars are partiularly effective, again adding to the indie genre.
  • The editing needs tightening up on, it needs to cut to the beat.
  • The ending is a little disjointed, the clips need reordering.
  • Some of the clips at the end aren't in black and white.
I therefore plan to change these elements in the next draft edit to continue improving the product further.

Third Draft Edit (Music Video)

Third Draft Edit

Today, Izzy and I decided to make further advancements on our music video. We added a 'cinematic' effect by adding two black bars to the top and bottom of the video, as well as altering the colour to give a more professional feel to the video. Next week, we plan to add in the new footage of our performer and also re-film an ending for our music video.

Refilming- 27/10/16

Refilming

Today, Izzy and I also refilmed Nathan, our performer. We did this due to feedback from our previous edit. The feedback we recieved showed that we needed to refilm mainly the first verse, because Nathan didn't really express himself as we wanted. Futher on in the video when he became more confident infront of the camera, he began to use more facial and hand expressions which made the video more interesting. We were also missing some of the footage we needed for some of the verses and so we decided that it would be a good idea to re-film all of the verses incase we needed to change some of the footage. From the first shoot, we learnt that it was better to film each verse, stop, and then re-film because doing one take meant that some of the lyrics were not sang as we needed them. Overall, we are very happy with the performance element and we think it will work really well in our music video.
One of the clips of our performer singing.

 Editing

After researching into the use of colour to make our music video more cinematic, Izzy and I decided to apply what we have learnt to our own music video. We played around with the colour to see what we thought looked the best. We oringally went for a more orange toned effect, but in places where we had filmed indoors, it made the footage look way to artifical and orange. After playing around with the colours some more, we decided on a very faint orange/brown tone. This took quite a long time to change because we had to alter each clip individually and couldn't change the colour by grouping all of the clips together and then altering the colour. Even though it did take quite a long time, it was worth it in the end. To do this, we went to effect controls, then fast colour corrector, and then edited the numbers below the colour wheel to get the particular colour we wanted on each of the clips.
We then added the black cinematic bars to the top and bottom of the music video. These are the pink parts underneath the video. We did this by adding two black screens and then shrunk each one from the top and then from the bottom, so that each video clip sits inbetween the two black bars. This means that next week, we need to move some of the clips up or down so that we don't chop off anyones heads or have important parts of the footage out of shot.

Researching cinematic effects

Researching cinematic effects for our music video

Today Izzy and I have decided that we want to focus on altering the colour on our music video. When conducting research before we started filming for our music video, we both noticed that the videos we thought were most effective and suited the 'indie' genre the best were the ones that had a cinematic effect on them. We didn't to alter the colours significantly, but we did want to add a subtle change in colour.

We decided to go on to YouTube to get some tips on the easiest and most effective way to add the two black bars to create a cinematic effect, as well as adding colour to our clips. The video below was very useful because we were able to follow it step by step to find how to edit each part on Adobe Premiere Pro.

Audience Feedback- Second Draft Edit (Music Video)

Audience Feedback- Second Draft Edit

Image result for questionAs with the first draft edit, we decided to conduct audience feedback. We will do this for each draft edit in order to improve our product even further. Since the first draft edit we completed, we made all of the improvements that our audience suggested. After all; they are the ones who will be consuming our product so their opinions are very valid. Here is a summary of audience feedback from our second draft edit, which we will alter for the next draft edit we produce.

It is important to note that we haven't decided how we are going to edit the ending, so after 3minutes 8 seconds, footage is placed in a random order which we plan to change in the next few weeks.

  • With the new improvements it looks much more like a music video, displaying more typical conventions of a music video.
  • More performance needed to make it appear more like a music video rather than a narrative.
  • The close up shots of the performer and the guitar are really successful, but the mid shots of the performer are less successful. He needs to be more animated by moving his hands more, with more facial expressions too.
  • The ending could be more romantic.
  • Some of the shots are slightly clunky, for example the shot of both actors pointing at the posters.
  • 3 minutes 29 seconds is out of focus.
  • The ducks are not effective, the gate has been used before and at the end, the performer isn't signing but this is because you haven't finished this element yet.

Audience Feedback- Third Edit (Magazine Advert)

Audience Feedback- Third Edit for the Magazine Advert

Image result for questionWhen compared the image used in the previous magazine advert, this one is much better as Nathan is definitely the focal point and the background is slightly blurred too, with nothing to distract the audience behind him.

I prefer this image because the direct address is much clearer. As well as this, I have decided to keep the same text as the previous magazine advert as this contrasts nicely between the background and the colours aren't complicated either. My next step was to gather some audience feedback on whether the text looks better with just all black and all white at the bottom or how it is at the moment.
Here is a summary of what I found:
  • Much better at selling the artist, this links nicely to your music video.
  • The font's work really well and stand out against the background.
  • You should play with the image and manipulation of the photography, for example you could perfect the performer's skin using photoshop to add to the star image.
  • You could include some logos on where the music is available from and also include a record label so it links to other products.

In the next few days I am going to edit the image further and act on the feedback given to improve my final product.

Second Draft Edit (Music Video)

Second Draft Edit of Music Video

This is the second draft edit of the music video that Izzy and I have been working on. We decided to produce a second draft edit in order to obtain audience feedback to improve the music video even further. As mentioned previously, we decided to add a performance element with lip syncing, as well as deleting the pregnancy scene. We also decided to re-order some of the footage in order to turn the video from half of it being in chronological order to the other half not being in chronological order as this was inconsistent. Now, we have edited it to a non-chronological order which we feel is more effective.

Please note: After 3.06 this is not the footage we want to include. This still needs to be edited for the final draft edit.

Audience Feedback- Second Draft Magazine Advert

Audience Feedback- Second Draft Magazine Advert

For the second draft edit of my magazine advert, I summarised my findings of what my audience said:
Image result for question

I altered the colouring of the image of Nathan by adjusting the brightness and contrast.

Initially, I really liked how this brought out the colours of the sky and made all the colours more vivid.

However, when asking my peers and teachers what they thought, they noticed that the cloud behind Nathan makes it look at though his head is on fire. I hadn't realised this until it was pointed out to me. This could affect the overall feel and distract the audience away from the actual image. For this reason, I decided to change the image on my magazine advert.

I did however, like the fonts used here and that the top text is black and the bottom text is white. I think this is really simple but effective and effectively contrasts between the two. I will replicate this on the next magazine advert I make.

Editing for our second draft- 18th October 2016

Today, Izzy and I decided to start work on our second draft edit for our music video. We have 3 weeks until the final deadline. Using the audience feedback from both our peers and teachers, we decided to make the appropriate ammendments to improve the music video further.

After collating our audience feedback, we decided that the pregnacy seen was too rushed into the end of the song, as well as the first half of the music video not being in chronological order, but the second half with the pregnancy was. This was inconsistant, so we had to make the decision to either put the first half into order or delete the pregnancy scene. After concidering our options, we decided to delete the pregnancy scene and reorder some of the footage. This way, having no chronology is fine because it is a consistant convention throughout the music video. Instead, we added some more shots from filming in Nottingham city centre which we hadn't yet included. We have also left some gaps in the footage in order to add a performance element. We plan to film our performance element on Thursday.
Here is some of the extra footage we used to fill the gaps.
Another thing we needed to edit out of the music video was one shot where our actors looked at me behind the camera, so this didn't look natural. This was in the baking scene and was luckily really easy to edit out.
Here, we edited the footage to make sure the actors didn't look directly at the camera.
Next, we left a gap for the performance element of the song, which we plan to layer over the top of some footage. After that, we decided to add more footage which hadn't yet been included. Izzy and I had to move our footage along whilst adding new footage, making sure that it still cut to the correct beat. We then realised that we need to refilm at a different location in order to obtain more footage which is appropriate for the music video as we want to include a happier narrative.
New footage added afterthe gap where we plan to add a narrative.
Finally, we added an individual shot of Rob on his own, before we plan to add new footage along with a performance element after we have filmed at a different location for a wider variety of footage.
Individual shot of Rob alone which is the last bit of footage we have for now.

Here is the draft plan for my digipak. I really like the images as they are really crisp and each image is different. However, one problem is that it doesn't really link to my other media texts. I may therefore need to retake my images to make them link.

Audience Feedback- First draft magazine advert

Audience Feedback- First draft magazine advert

I completed the first edit for my magazine advert. Overall, I am happy with the look of it however, I am not sure that the colours work and I think that the cover is too simplistic. For this reason, I completed some audience feedback in order to find out how I can improve. I found:

  • Image result for questionLovely photo but it doesn't it fit the track/artist.
  • Font works but would look even better with a variety of fonts.
  • Coming soon is not conventional for mag adverts for albums
  • Make sure text can be read
  • Institutional elements missing, for example record labels.

I completely agree with this audience feedback and will definitely reconsider my ideas. In hindsight, I do think that I need to re-take my images to suit the male artist that performs the track of my music video, so that all 3 of my media texts link in some way.

Today, I made the final ammendments to my magazine ad. I added the bottom text which advertises which song features on the album. I also added 'coming soon' so that the audience know that the album is going to be released soon. I also altered the brightness and contrast to alter the colours of the image, enhancing the model.

Creating a draft magazine advert

Using photoshop to create a magazine advert

Today I made a start editing my magazine advert to advertising the album which 'Fall at your feet' will have been taken from. Previously, I had taken photographs of my friend Abi to include on my digipak. I went to the folder where I had saved the image and selected the image I wanted to use as the cover of my magazine.

This is the raw image I have decided to use.
Next, I decided to begin adding text to my image, modeled on the magazine draft I created before. I began to add white text for the title of the album 'Alone At The Station'.
The first title has been added here.
I then began to add the other parts of the titles, adding 'a brand new album from' and 'Saint Raymond'. This again, was modelled on my draft digipak.
The next titles have been added.
Tomorrow, I plan to add the final bottom titles to complete my draft edit. I might alter the colours on the image to make them more vivid.

Audience Responce- First Draft Edit

Audience Feedback- First draft edit

By gaining audience feedback for our first  draft edit, we are able to see what the audience like and dislike within the music video and make appropriate ammenments to the music video. We asked for a variety of audience opinions from both our peers and teachers. Here is a summary of feedback we recieved:
  • Excellent attention to framing and shot variety.
  • Narrative lacks some coherency - no chronology - in and out of same shops?
  • Pregnancy seems a bit abrupt and rushed into the end of the narrative
  • Some jump cuts need smoothing.
  • Some glances at camera need clearing.

For the next draft edit we produce, we plan to take these points into concideration to improve our music video. After doing this, we will upload a new draft edit and gain further audience feedback. We will do this until we are completely happy with the product.

First Draft Edit- Fall At Your Feet

First Draft Edit- Fall At Your Feet

Today Izzy and I put together a first draft edit of our music video for 'Fall At Your Feet'. We haven't included any titles or extra transitions yet, but we can make all the necessary adjustments in the following weeks. This does however, give us an insight into what the finished product will look like.

Editing- 07/10/16

Editing- Friday 7th October 2016.

Today was an inset day, however Izzy and I decided to go into college to edit our music video. Our aim was to get our first draft of the music video complete; adding the footage into the parts of the song that best fit each piece of footage. This way we could get an idea on continuity. Over the next month, Izzy and I plan to add transitions and change the colouring of our music video into a cinematic effect.

On Tuesday when we last edited, we had established the beginning and the end of the music video. So today's aim was to fill the middle of the song to add footage to the song from beginning to end. We did this by adding the footage we had filmed yesterday, as this was what we needed to complete the narrative. We sorted through the footage and use shots we felt were good in quality and portrayed what we wanted.
Here, the middle footage was being altered.

After adding all of the middle footage, we had a final edit. Due to the nature of the song and the strong beat, Izzy and I decided that we wanted consistency throughout our music video. We wanted each shot to cut on the beat. We left a small gap in some parts of the footage to accentuate this, whilst in other places we used jump cuts or cutting from one piece of footage to the next continuously. We worked really hard to do this, repeatedly listening to the song and reviewing how it cut. If it was slightly out, we went back and used the razor tool (circled below) on Adobe Premiere Pro to make the cuts sharper.
We then went back over the beginning and end which we had edited before today and made sure that it all pieced together correctly and followed the music correctly, before exporting the file to YouTube.
After we had reviewed the footage and we were both happy with our first draft edit, we exported the file from Adobe Premiere Pro to enable us to upload it to YouTube.

Plan for filming- Thursday 6th October 2016.

Plan for Thursday filming.

When filming on Saturday, having a plan on where we were going to film and what we needed to film really helped. This way, we could follow the plan but also film any extra shots we felt would add to the narrative. We also felt as though it allowed us to be more organised to make the most of our time. For this reason, I have created a schedule tomorrow, with details on location, who is needed to film and the type of shots required to film. After tomorrow, Izzy and I should have all the footage we need to complete the first draft music video.

About the artist and record label- Saint Raymond

Saint Raymond.

Saint Raymond grew up in Bramcote,
Nottingham. The name 'Saint Raymond' came from the street that he grew up on in his hometown and also his Grandad's name. He kickstarted his career when he started playing small gigs and open mic nights around Nottingham at the Rescue Rooms and The Bodega. He gained popularity in 2013 when he released his self penned debut extended play 'Escape' on Never Fade Records. Escapade featured heavily in the iTunes album chart upon its release. The lead track 'Fall At Your Feet' was promoted as iTunes Single of the Week. On 23 April 2014, Burrows announced that he would be the opening act for Ed Sheeran's Multiply Tour in the UK and Europe. Following the new release of his new album in 2015, Burrows went on a UK tour in the November and December of 2015.

Saint Raymond is signed to Warner Music UK which is a subsidiary of Warner Music Group which is an American multinational entertainment and record label conglomerate headquartered in New York City.

Editing- 4th October 2016

Today, Izzy and dedicated 3 hours towards editing our music video. We wanted to spend time to get a large bulk of the music video edited. We looked through the footage we have filmed and decided which bits we thought would fit each part of the song.

We decided that we wanted to stick to the stroy board planning, altering it slightly with aesthetic shots and close ups which would add to the overall 'arty' look of the music video. We still however, wanted to create a happy section to the video, a dramatic turn, and then a break up, almost acting as a beginning, middle and end.

Firstly, Izzy and I inserted the MP3 file of the song 'Fall At Your Feet' onto the audio line on Adobe Premiere pro. This allowed us to add the footage and cut it where we felt as though it fitted the song. This way, we could see how much time was left of the song, and also when the song changed to the verse and chorus, as we want these to be different. For the verses, we want to have the story line, but at the chorus we want to have 'busier' footage with elements of performance, which we are yet to film.
The green part is where the sound has been inseted onto Adobe Premiere Pro.
We then started to add in the clips, seeing where they fit and also cutting them where appropriate, using the razor tool on Adobe Premiere Pro. By the end of the 3 hour editing session, we managed to put together the first minute and a half, and the last minute of the song. We are yet to add in the middle part, because we are due to film this on Thursday. We plan to insert these parts into our music video on Friday, when we plan to spend all day editing out music video further.
Here, Izzy and I can be seen editing our footage.

Importing and editing footage from Satuday's shoot 03/10/16

Importing and editing footage from Saturday

Today, I decided to import the footage we filmed on Saturday onto the college computer that we edit on. This way, we are constantly backing up the footage we have incase the SD card decides to break. I uploaded the clips and we now have over 200 pieces of footage to work with for our draft deadline, which hopefully should be enough.

I put the footage into order on Adobe Premiere Pro ready for Izzy and I to edit tomorrow. We plan to add effects and really pull all the footage we have together, to hopefully start to create the storyline we wish our music video to follow.
Here is an image of me uploading the footage.
Here is some of the footage uploaded into the folder.
