Laura Mulvey wrote about the film industry and we can apply her theory
to music videos as well. Her theory discusses the 'the
male gaze', an is the idea that orginated from traditional film but
can be applied today, that the people 'behind the camera', so directiors,
producers and camera men were all men and so therefore the women in
front of the camera were objectified and sexualised. Male characters are
much more developed whilst females aren't. This links into the idea of
voyerism which is the pleasure others get from watching others perform sexual acts.
This can be applied to music videos when women are showna acting in a
sexual way or dressed in clothes which others could imagine in a
sexualised way.
