Katy Perry 'Teenage Dream' Magazine Advert
Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson, known professionally as Katy Perry, is an American singer, songwriter, and actress. Teenage Dream is the third studio album by Katy Perry and it was released on August 24, 2010, through Capitol Records.
Initially when looking at this magazine advert, it automatically grabs the attention of the audience because of the vibrant colours used. There are lots of oranges, pinks and purple tones, which is also reflected in the lighting, as Katy's skin is also a blue-metallic colour. The bright, vibrant colours could be a image-text cohesion, because it may reflect the album name, because being a teenager is all about having fun and experimenting, and this appears to be the look Katy has opted for.
The main focus point of this magazine advert is the image of Katy Perry, as she is the main selling point. She is seen to be modelling in a sexual manner, but this could be interpreted in a number of ways. Firstly, it could be that she is attempting to attract a male audience through her lack of clothing. Freud's theory can be applied here, Voyeurism, whereby the audience may receive pleasure in watching people perform in a sexual manner. Or alternatively, Laura Mulvey's Male Gaze theory can be applied, as the women in front of the camera may have been objectified by the males who are usually behind the camera. The other interpretation could be that Katy is just being body positive and promoting body confidence, as she does have a younger audience.
The typography within the magazine advert corresponds with the colour scheme in Katy's outfit and also the background colours. 'Katy Perry' is presented in a serif font, which is fun and playful, representing how teenage years are fun, and this is in a similar font to the previous album 'California Girls' and so there is some continuity as a brand. The 'teenage dream' however, is in a sans serif, white font. This draws the attention to the title of the album so the audience immediately know what is being advertised. Towards the bottom, a yellow text is used in a serif font to state that this is a new album, and the date of release. The date of release is much larger than the rest of the text, therefore drawing attention to this element. This is effective marketing because it ensures the audience cannot miss the release. The pink sans serif text in that same section, reveals the previously released singles which feature on the album, again persuading the audience to buy this album if they enjoyed those particular singles.
Finally, Katy is sporting a blue wig, which was her signature/statement look at the time. This ties into the colour scheme, but at the same time it links to Katy's on stage persona which is confident and bold, showcasing her individuality which is a key aspect of attracting her audiences and her unusual costumes are a key attribute to her success.
