Arctic Monkeys 'AM' Magazine Advert
Arctic Monkeys are an English rock band formed in 2002 in High Green, a suburb of Sheffield. The band consists of Alex Turner (lead vocals, rhythm guitar, lead guitar), Matt Helders (drums, vocals), Jamie Cook (lead guitar, rhythm guitar, piano) and Nick O'Malley (bass, backing vocals). The album AM was released on September 9th 2013.
This advert is incredibly simplistic. The typography and images are presented on a reverse block. The text which informs the audience of the band name 'Arctic Monkeys' is in a bold, sans serif font. Again, this represents the simplicity of the marketing package. This particular font is often used for the Arctic Monkeys, and so fans which have followed them for a long time will know that this is the font which is used on other parts of the marketing package such as the digipaks and adverts which relate to this group. The consistency helps the audience automatically link all of the different aspects such as the album cover and magazine advert together. Furthermore, the text at the bottom simply states that this is the new album, and also the date of release. This is very simple, but it is still very effective and effectively grabs the audience's attention.
The band chose to not have an image of themselves on the magazine poster. This doesn't come as a surprise, because for this album, they use a symbol which represents sound waves. I think this is particularly effective because it represents the emphasis and importance of their music, which often indie and rock bands will do, and it is their unique selling point. This sound wave symbol is automatically associated with the Arctic Monkeys self titled album, as it visually catches the audiences attention. People who aren't huge fans of the Arctic Monkeys will probably be able to associate this symbol with the band because it is consistently on all of their marketing and promotion.
Due to the simple layout of the magazine poster, this could suggest that this particular band do not need to fill the advert with lots of content in order to be recognised. As well as this, it suggests how they already have a well established fan base and do not need to sell themselves anymore, just a gentle reminder for fans. In addition, the simplicity doesn't really reveal too much about the album and so will have encouraged people want to go out and buy the album as they would have been intrigued to see what it is all about.
What I learnt...
I have learnt that sometimes, less is more. This magazine advert is particularly effective and doesn't really reveal much about the albums content, however this is an effective marketing strategy because it will make people more likely to go out and buy the album. However, I feel that I could be more creative with the use of photography in my own magazine advert.
