Digipak analysis- The Last Shadow Puppets 'Everything You've Come To Expect'
The Last Shadow Puppets are an English indie-rock band consisting of Alex Turner, Miles Kane, James Ford, and Zach Dawes. They released their comeback album 'Everything You've Come To Expect' on 1st April 2016. I chose to analyse this digipak
The Cover
The Last Shadow Puppets (TLSP) front album cover. Before, I analysed Adele's album '25' and a similarity is that, like Adele, TLSP have chosen to not write the title of their album or who it is by on the front. Unlike Adele, the audience cannot initially identify this album as being by TLSP. However, I still think it is a highly effective album cover. This is because the girl on the front, has a stance similar to a puppet, representing the name of the album. I really like the colours used, as they are a burnt orange. You can't identify the girl either, but I think that this works really well because it definitely represents the indie rock genre. It is edgy, unique and creative.
The Middle Slides
The middle slides follow on nicely from the front cover. I really like how this album has pages for lyrics. This is a good feature for the audience. The text is displayed on a reverse block background, in a sans serif font which is easy for the audience to read, whilst also being simplistic.
After the first page of lyrics, TLSP present the audience with photos of the two lead singers; Alex Turner and Miles Kane. These are in a slight sepia/orange colour exposure, following on from the CD cover. I really like this effect, it strongly represents the indie rock genre whilst also portraying a slight 'retro' look, with contributes to the overall alternative look. As well as this, this goes against the stereotypical conventions of an indie rock band being all about the image. This however does focus on how passionate the band are about creating their music, and the fact that they enjoy coming together to make the music. The digipak then has the next set of songs, again presented with lyrics as the first page of lyrics, so it is therefore consistent. The following page then has photos of some of the band members, presented in black and white. This set of photos don't really match the theme of the front album cover, but it does match the black and white theme of the lyric section of the digipak. Therefore, I think this is effective because there is a bit of variety.
The final set of photos are of Alex Turner. The photos on the left are in the edited orange tone effect, which I really like. This is something I would like to include for my final piece, as I think it is really aesthetically pleasing and gives a nice feel to the album. I really like cinematic styles, as I think that this is very effective and suits the indie-rock genre perfectly.
The Back Slide
The back slide of the album insert is of the two main singers, Alex and Miles. This is in black and white, which is a running theme throughout the insert. It doesn't match the front cover, as this time is isn't a picture of an unknown identity. I think this is effective because the image (a mid shot) does portray the friendship between the two singers and is also creative too.
The CD disk
The CD cover is predominantly black, which looks very professional. The album title; Everything You've Come To Expect, is broken into individual letters which are presented on playing cards. I can't work out what this represents, but never the less I think it is very aesthetically pleasing. Furthermore, the letters are in orange which fits with the theme on the front album cover and the effects on the photo inside the album insert. I think this album is very creative, but has a theme and is therefore something I would like to replicate.
The back cover of the CD
The back cover does present the band name and title of the album, which wasn't presented on the front of the album. The font here is the same as the lyrics inside the album insert, in on a reverse block background, with the text in a sans serif font. The only part of the text which is in orange, is the title of the album. This matches the orange theme throughout.
What I learnt:
Through analysing this album, I have realised that the indie rock genre is the genre you can be very creative with, and I really like this approach when creating products. As well as this, I have realised that a theme really pulls every aspect of the album together. This digipak is similar to what I have in mind for my own designs and will act as an inspiration.
