Andrew Goodwin

Andrew Goodwin wrote the book 'dancing in the distraction factory' within which he identifies some key features of a music video to distinguish it as a form. Music videos that follow these conventions are the most successful, however challenging these conventions, if done in the correct way, can be equally as successful. Here are summaries of the key features:
  1. Particualr types of genres have certain video styles and iconography , for example stage performace or dancing.
  2. A relationship between lyrics and visuals where the visuals illustrate, amplify or contradict the lyrics.
  3. A relationship between music and visuals linked to the beat and pace of the music  as well as solo instruments featured.
  4. Demands of a record label will include the need for lots of close ups of the artist and artists may develop motifs which reoccur.
  5. Frequently refernce to the notion of looking and voyeristic treatment of the female body.
  6. Intertextual references are made (films, tv programmes and other music videos.)
