Magazine Advert- Jessie J

Jessie J 'Who you are' magazine advert

Jessica Ellen Cornish (born 27 March 1988), better known by her stage name Jessie J, is an English singer and songwriter.
The first thing that the audience is drawn to, is the image of Jesse J. The direct address of the singer  combined with a close up shot captures the audiences attention, as she is looking directly into the camera. As well as this, her mouth is slightly parted, which could have two interpretations. Either this is in a sexual manner, which is voyeurism, or it the fact that she is being objectified due to Laura Mulvey's theory whereby mainly males are behind the camera and therefore objectify the woman in front of the camera. Furthermore, the colour scheme is predominantly black, Jessie J is seen to be wearing a black top, black lipstick and black hair. Her hair is very blunt and structured, as is her dark, heavy makeup which could represent her strength and power of being 'who you are', which is the title of the debut album this is advertising. The dark colour scheme does however, draw attention to her very pale complexion as it is contrasted. The black and white colour scheme could represent the different genres of music which feature on this album, for example the white could signify 'pure' songs and the black could signify a 'darker' and more edgy side to her music. This draws the audiences attention to her face, therefore making her the main focus and selling point.

Another key focus on the advert is Jessie J's signature, which is used to represent her. This is almost part of the branding, and is a key part of her image. This is used on all of her merchandise and so the audience become familiar with this. The gold serif font really contrasts against the dark black background and so draws attention to the artists name. The positioning of this text and the colour almost mimics a necklace. Below this, is the name of the album, intertwined within Jessie J's name in a smaller, white serif font. In terms of other typography on the advert, the rest of the text is in a sans serif font. The first line 'Debut album' is in gold, and then each line alternates between gold and white. The names of the singles are also in a larger font to draw the audience's attention to this factor, because if they enjoyed these singles then they are more likely to want to buy the album.

Furthermore, I think it is effective how the website and record company logo are positioned at the bottom of the magazine advert. This instantly draws attention to where you can find out more information about the artist, so therefore successfully promotes Jessie J.

What I have learnt...

I have learnt that having a colour scheme really links the entire poster together nicely. It makes the advert feel as though it is as one, and not lots of separate parts. I really like this idea and hope to incorporate a colour scheme within my own magazine advert, as well as contrasting images and text as this appears to be very effective and eye catching.
