Lyric Analysis
I have decided to analyse the lyrics of our chosen song. This is useful because it allows a deeper meaning to be explored which will hopefully help to form a narrative which will fit the song well.
You used to get it in your fishnets
Now you only get it in your night dress
Discarded all the naughty nights for niceness
Landed in a very common crisis
Everything's in order in a black hole
Nothing seems as pretty as the past though
That Bloody Mary's lacking in Tabasco
Remember when he used to be a rascal?
The best you ever had
The best you ever had is just a memory
And those dreams weren't as daft as they seem
Not as daft as they seem,
My love, when you dream them up...
Now you only get it in your night dress
Discarded all the naughty nights for niceness
Landed in a very common crisis
Everything's in order in a black hole
Nothing seems as pretty as the past though
That Bloody Mary's lacking in Tabasco
Remember when he used to be a rascal?
- These lyrics represent how the girl the song is referencing may have been 'passed around' boys a fair bit, perhaps with a lack of self respect. The lyrics 'Now you only get it in your night dress' suggests that these bad habits may have calmed down slightly and that she is more settled, perhaps with one main partner in a more serious relationship.
The best you ever had
The best you ever had is just a memory
And those dreams weren't as daft as they seem
Not as daft as they seem,
My love, when you dream them up...
- Here, the lyrics talk about a girl who probably had a rough time in a relationship, but is reminiscing on the good times.
Flicking through a little book of sex tips
Remember when the boys were all electric?
Now when she tells she's gonna get it
I'm guessing that she'd rather just forget it
Clinging to not getting sentimental
Said she wasn't going but she went still
Likes her gentlemen not to be gentle
Was it a Mecca dauber or a betting pencil?
- The reference of sex is used again here, but also represents the confusion of the relationship, perhaps how she didn't know where she stood with her partner, which has resulted in her not wanting a serious relationship anytime soon.
Where did you go?
Where did you go? Whoa.
- This section of the lyrics suggests that the person who is singing is asking where the girl went. Perhaps the relationship was a blur, or it was over incredibly quickly before it really began. Another interpretation could be that she maybe disappeared out his life without any valid reason, or perhaps more of a metaphorical meaning in terms of her losing the personality he once knew.
Falling about
You took a left off Last Laugh Lane
You just sounded it out
You're not coming back again.
- This shows how they had fun in the relationship, but also conveys how there is no chance that she will return and so their relationship might never be the same again.
